Vilas Insider — Fall 2023

Greetings from the J-School! The beginning of the fall semester is one of my favorite times of the year as we welcome new and returning J-Schoolers back to Vilas. This year, in addition to our hardworking students, our department has had the pleasure of welcoming three new faculty members to our ranks. Jing Wang joins us as an assistant professor and will teach courses on race and ethnicity in the media, as well as Introduction to Mass Communication and graduate seminars. Miya Williams Fayne joins us as an Anna Julia Cooper Fellow and will spend this year conducting research on the Black press in the new media age. She will begin teaching in Fall 2024. Adam Schrager, who is a familiar face around Vilas and has taught several courses for us over the years, has joined our team as teaching faculty and will teach courses in video journalism. We pride ourselves on our innovative and collaborative faculty, and I am thrilled to welcome Jing, Miya and Adam to campus. I cannot wait to see the impact they make within our J-School community and beyond.

Emeritus Professor James Hoyt was curious why J-School alum Bob Teague (BA'50) had not been recognized by UW Athletics for his accomplishments on the football team. Hoyt's curiosity paid off when Teague was finally inducted on Friday, September 15.

Many of the J-School's 2023 Ph.D. graduates are venturing out into the world and pursuing their new adventures.

Hans Obma (BA'02) is a creator, writer and lead actor in the intended series A Question of Service.

Ilana Fromm (BA'14) has been on the ground floor of a growing, successful startup since 2020.
