Kick-Off: Strategic Planning 2025
Earlier this month, Dean Levine was thrilled to have more than 150 team members participate in the kick-off of our strategic planning process. SVM and UWVC faculty, staff, students, and partners came together for three Appreciative Inquiry Summits. These sessions were filled with thoughtful discussions, innovative ideas, and a shared passion for the future. Along with the summits, Dean Levine’s ongoing listening sessions, meetings, and key events with alumni and rDVMS – and what he’s been learning from those interactions – are forming the foundation of the strategic planning process.

Together, we will continue to work hard to identify opportunities for growth, progress, and continued excellence in veterinary medical education, clinical care, research, and outreach.  Visit our strategic planning website for more information about the process and how you can share your thoughts.

Our 2023-24 Annual Report summarizes, exemplifies, and highlights the SVM’s and UWVC’s reputation for leadership and excellence and also helps lay the groundwork for our priorities and areas of focus as we begin 2025 and our strategic planning process. If you have not seen it yet, take a look! If you’d like a printed copy or copies mailed to you, please contact Maggie Baum at mmbaum@wisc.edu or (608) 438-2814.

Starr Cameron Named Assistant Dean for Clinical and Translational Research; Maggie Baum Assumes Role of Communications Director
“It has been my honor to work with Lauren Trepanier (Department of Medical Sciences) over many years, and for the last six months here at UW. Lauren has done a remarkable job elevating clinical research at our university, supporting learners and early career faculty, and as a PI in her own right. Lauren, I’m excited for you and at the same time sad that you’ll be retiring from UW this December.  Starr Cameron (MS’21; Department of Medical Sciences) will be assuming the role of Assistant Dean for Clinical and Translational Research on September 1, 2025. Starr, congratulations and the SVM looks forward to your leadership in this important area!” – Dean Jon Levine

In addition, after a search, Maggie Baum accepted the newly created position of Communications Director. Maggie, who has more than 25 years of strategic communications experience, started at the SVM in May of 2024 as the school’s Publications and Media Relations Manager. In her new role, she will lead all internal and external communications efforts for the SVM and UW Veterinary Care.

In the News
In a partnership with the SVM, the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is conducting a first-of-its-kind study on FLASH radiation therapy for dogs with osteosarcoma. The study aims to determine if FLASH treatment, which delivers radiation 1000x faster than conventional therapy, can spare normal tissue while effectively treating the cancer. This research could pave the way for human translation of FLASH radiation therapy.

Thomas Friedrich (’97 PhD’03; Department of Pathobiological Sciences) and Peter Halfmann (’01 PhD’08; Department of Pathobiological Sciences) were recently featured in a Wisconsin Public Radio article discussing the first human death from avian flu in the U.S. In this piece, they discuss the importance of stricter hygiene measures, flu shots, and comprehensive testing to reduce risks and protect public health.

Yoshihiro Kawaoka (Department of Pathobiological Sciences) and Gabriele Neumann (Department of Pathobiological Sciences) were recently highlighted as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), UW–Madison’s technology transfer organization. Their vaccine technology is contributing to the fight against influenza and helping protect human health worldwide, demonstrating the university’s legacy of innovation on campus.
