September/October 2024
Bucky, Brats and a Badger Win!
Thanks to all who joined us for the 2024 Tailgate on Saturday, September 7. It was wonderful to see so many alumni back at the SVM to partake in tours of SVM North, enjoy classic Wisconsin tailgate fare, have a chance to meet Dean Jon Levine and pose for pics with Bucky Badger. It’s always a bonus when the day ends with a win: the Badgers defeated the South Dakota Coyotes 27-13.
Earlier that morning we held a meeting of the SVM Alumni Association (SVMAA). We greatly appreciate the many contributions of our members. At this meeting, the board provided an update on its history, shared the results of its alumni survey, and had a discussion with Dean Levine. Meeting minutes will be posted soon on the SVMAA web page, where you can also find information on becoming a member. Members are invited to join the next meeting via Zoom on October 7, so be on the lookout for an email with details.

And, as the tailgate concluded, we were thrilled to recognize two deserving graduates with our 2024 alumni awards for achievements in advancing the veterinary medical profession, animal and human health, and humanity. Read about this year’s recipients below!

Zuba and Johnson Honored with 2024 Alumni Awards
The SVM Alumni Association (SVMAA) is pleased to announce our 2024 alumni awards recipients:

– Dr. Jeffery Zuba (DVM’87), SVMAA Distinguished Service Award – DVM

The awards program was launched in 2019 to recognize graduates – both DVM and graduate degree program alumni – for achievements in advancing the veterinary medical profession, animal and human health, and humanity. In addition, the awards acknowledge those whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers honor the legacy of excellence at the SVM.

Alumni Speakers Series & Bureau: We Invite You to Participate!
We’re excited to invite SVM alumni to participate in our Alumni Speaker Series and the newly established Alumni Speakers Bureau. These initiatives aim to provide valuable insights and professional development opportunities for our current DVM students while fostering stronger connections with our esteemed alumni.

Alumni Speaker Series: Our speaker series connects alumni with the SVM community through scheduled talks on a variety of topics. Whether you have insights on living and working abroad, entrepreneurship, changing career paths after graduation, or other relevant career or work/life topics, your knowledge and experience can inspire and guide our students. The series features nine TED-style talks or panel discussions once each month during the academic year. Events are offered virtually and in-person, allowing alumni from around the globe to participate via Zoom. Sessions will be recorded and shared with students who cannot attend live.

Alumni Speakers Bureau: The speakers bureau serves as a database of alumni willing to discuss pre-identified topics. If a student group or SVM department reaches out with a specific interest, we can connect them with you as a resource. This flexible option allows you to share your expertise at times that work best for you.

We’d love to hear from any and all alumni interested in participating and encourage you to APPLY HERE. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Cecilia Fredel at cgrinis@wisc.edu. Thank you for considering this opportunity to share your time, talents and expertise with the SVM community.

SVM News Briefs
Congratulations to Kim Keil Stietz (PhD’14; Department of Comparative Biosciences) for being awarded a CAIRIBU Interactions Core Collaboration Award for her project, “Genetic origin of incontinence linked to Shh signaling.” CAIRIBU Collaboration Awards support short-term, novel, high-risk, non-malignant urologic research. The awards support proposals that engage early-stage investigators or those new to urology research, establish new collaborations, and consist of highly interdisciplinary research teams.

Lauren Baker (’09 MS’14 DVM’16 PhD’19) was recently profiled as a new UW–Madison faculty member, joining the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences in May 2024 as an assistant professor. Her work focuses on searching for genetic drivers of complex disease in companion animal models.

Calico Schmidt (’88 DVM’92; Department of Pathobiological Sciences) shared her thoughts with Inverse in a recent news article about whether it is safe for cats to sleep in bed with their humans.
