Therapy Dog Kicks Off Wellness Care at UWVC
As part of a sneak preview to a story we’ll be working on this fall, our communications team got to meet Ezmae, a one-year-old Golden Retriever, during her initial wellness visit to UW Veterinary Care. Ezmae just had her swearing in ceremony as a working therapy dog for the UW-Milwaukee Police Department. This good, good girl will provide comfort in times of stress or crisis for both officers and the community served by UWMPD. Ezmae’s care is fully funded as part of the SVM’s commitment to caring for Wisconsin law enforcement animals.Through the generosity of donors, the School has been able to provide discounted veterinary medical care to K9 and Equine officers who are UWVC patients.

UWVC’s State-of-the-Art Interventional Suite See First Patient
A major milestone occurred in July as our state-of-the-art interventional suite completed its first cardiac catheterization procedure. Popcorn, a 7-month-old Terrier mix, had a stent placed across her severely narrowed pulmonic valve. Congrats to the whole team that made it a great success! (That’s Popcorn pictured below in our article about veterinary nurses and technicians!)

Clinical Study: Eye Enucleation
We have a new study for dogs who need unilateral enucleation of the eye. Owners will receive a $200 credit toward the surgery and either oral carprofen or pregabalin to take post-surgery. The study will assess which medication is better at controlling post-operative pain. Participants will get priority when scheduling and must have temperaments that allow frequent handling for pain assessment. Dogs that have received analgesic or anti-inflammatory medications within the 24 hours prior to surgery, have any other source of pain not attributable to the affected eye or have preexisting conditions for which carprofen or pregabalin are contraindicated are excluded from the study. For more information contact UWVC Ophthalmology at 608/263-7600 or email clinicalstudies@vetmed.wisc.edu.

Welcome, Levine Family!
Over the last few months, we’ve shared a variety of announcements and welcome messages for Dean Jon Levine, who officially assumed the role on August 1. We’re excited to have Dean Levine on board, and the SVM and UWVC teams also extend a warm welcome to his family. Along with his wife, Dr. Gwendolyn Levine – who is joining the SVM as a clinical associate professor in radiology – and his son, George, we also want to give a shout out to the Levine family pets! Quark and Proton are adorable dachshunds (as you can see in the photo they were a big help with the family move) and Chase is a very handsome horse.
