UWVC Opens Leading Edge Oncology Suite
UW Veterinary Care’s oncology service is seeing patients in its new space. The renovated suite quadruples the space available to UWVC clinicians to see cancer patients and doubles the hospital’s space for chemotherapy treatment. It’s also home to PET-CT, an advanced diagnostic tool that is redefining how diseases are diagnosed and treated in animals. Currently, UWVC’s oncology team is seeing about 100 patients per week. The new space will allow clinicians to see more patients and reduce wait times. It also offers more room for veterinary students, clinicians, and hospital support staff to interact and collaborate as they deliver best-in-class oncology care for UWVC clients and their pets.

New Clinical Study: Cats Needed
The UW Veterinary Care Clinical Studies department is seeking 90 participants for a study testing a new treatment for cats with Feline Interstitial Cystitis.

Does your cat strain in the litterbox, have blood in their urine, or urinate frequently in small amounts? They might be eligible to participate.

There is no cost to participants. The study pays for baseline screening (exam, bloodwork, Urinalysis/Urine culture, and bladder ultrasound) plus monthly treatment medications for six months.

Collaboration, Innovation and Transformation in Dairy Farming
June is National Dairy Month, and the School of Veterinary Medicine is home to an amazing outreach program known as The Dairyland Initiative. We wrote about the initiative, which has both global impacts and influence close to home, in the most recent edition of On Call magazine. Larson Acres, an innovative Wisconsin dairy farm in Evansville, has been working with The Dairyland Initiative to utilize best practices for cow comfort, milk quality, farm sustainability and more. One notable outcome of the partnership is the implementation of an advanced ventilation and heat abatement systems in some of the farm’s barns – helping keep cows cool during increasingly hot Wisconsin summers. The partnership between Larson Acres and The Dairyland Initiative demonstrates how collaboration, innovation, and science can transform dairy farming.

Supporting Blu
In April 2024, Wendy Sperloen of Stoughton noticed a bump on the shoulder of her 8-year-old hound, Blu. Upon further examination, Blu was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Because the primary care veterinary facility could not provide the overnight and surgical care Blu needed, the family was referred to UW Veterinary Care (UWVC).

Because of the aggressive nature of Blu’s case, once he arrived at UWVC he was quickly scheduled for surgery to have his paw amputated to remove the cancer. With the unexpected diagnosis of course came unexpected costs, a burden which felt heavy to Sperloen and her husband. When they learned there was grant funding that was available to assist clients in exactly this situation, they were immensely relieved.

The surgery was a success, and Sperloen reported that Blu quickly seemed to be free of pain and back to most of his usual activities, even with his newly three-legged status. Blu loves to run and play outside and then snuggle in for a nap. And, thanks to the support of Petco Love, he can continue his favorite activities cancer-free. Since the partnership began in 2021, Blu is one of nearly 100 cats and dogs at UW Veterinary Care who has benefitted from Petco Love funds that helped extend or improve the life of a beloved pet with cancer.

  • Keith Poulsen (’00 DVM’04 PhD’12; Department of Medical Sciences; director, Wisconsin Diagnostic Veterinary Laboratory) was quoted in an Associated Press story examining how federal funding volatility is affecting bird flu monitoring in the United States. Staffing changes at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine could slow the federal government’s monitoring, Poulsen said. “🥳Today is a remarkable day in the Geiger-Bronsky Clan. After 2 weeks of daily M-F radiation therapy — at University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine — we got to RING THE BELL! … Back on the road to home! 🥳❤️ the Oncology dressed Sparky in a UW scarf with signed messages to Sparky !” -- Michele Geiger-Bronsky via Facebook.
“Did you know that cats (and dogs) can be blood donors? We are proud to announce that Squeaky Cheese who just turned one year old is our second cat blood donor in the family. Ruckus (of course) has been donating for two years now. If you have a chill cat who doesn't mind being handled, please consider checking to see if any companion animal blood donor programs exist near you. Special shout-out to Emma from the UW School of Veterinary Medicine blood bank and to Underdog Pet Rescue, and his foster mom Jodi, where we found Squeaky Cheese. #BloodDonorsSaveLives” -- Jane E Duffstein via Facebook.
