The Flow Project is an art-science collaboration between undergraduate creatives in the UW system and Wisconsin-based water professionals. Together, these pairs create art inspired by water.

We are seeking both water professionals and creatives to be involved in the fifth year of the program.

Last year we supported 33 students across the UW system providing a small stipend for supplies and travel, professional development workshops, and gallery opportunities. The opening gallery event was during the Lakes and Rivers Convention in Stevens Point.

Six of our artists were interviewed by Kevin Sofen for SDG Talks, a podcast that highlights Change Makers and their work around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You can listen to these interviews here.

As a water professional, you will meet with the creative/artist to learn about each other's practices and collaborate on an art piece. We curate a wide range of mediums and artists from painters and sculptors to writers and poets to fashion designers. Creatives/artists will be paid $300-$500 to support their participation in the program.

★ LTE Emerging Contaminants Research Associate - Wisconsin DNR (Madison)

This position will synthesize, analyze, and report on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water, biota, and sediment of the Great Lakes basin and other regions of the state based upon a good understanding of PFAs, aquatic contaminants, and ecological and food web principles. The Manoomin Wiidookaage will work with and primarily support GLIFWC’s 11 member tribes by participating in GLIFWC’s manoomin team as it fulfills obligations relating to the shared caretaking responsibilities for wild rice habitat, abundance, and tribal harvest. Applications close Oct 25.

★ LTE Environmental Contaminants Specialist - Fisheries - Wisconsin DNR (Madison)

This position will develop and implement enhancements to Wisconsin’s fish consumption advisory program based upon a good understanding of aquatic contaminants, human health as related to consumption of contaminated fish and public communication sciences. Applications close Oct 29 at 11:59 pm CST.

★ Digital Content Coordinator - Green Lake Association

This part-time role offers a chance to bring your creativity and digital expertise to a small, committed environmental non-profit. You’ll craft compelling content, manage social media, and engage the community in the vital mission of improving Green Lake’s water quality. If you're a tech-savvy storyteller with a passion for conservation, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Position will remain open until filled—though applications received by Nov 15, 2024 will be given preference.

The Environmental Toxicologist will provide technical advice to 11 Ojibwe member tribes in the implementation of their off-reservation, treaty-reserved rights in the Ceded Territories of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, focused on environmental contaminant issues and will perform duties listed below in a manner consistent with Commission policies and procedures. Executive Director Position - Clean Water Action Council

The Clean Water Action Council of NE Wisconsin is seeking an Executive Director to start January 2, 2025, or earlier, when executive director Dean Hoegger retires.This is a 20-24 hours-per-week position with flexible hours offering the opportunity to guide the organization into the next decade. Work at the UW-Green Bay office with college interns, board members, and volunteer members to carry out the mission of protecting human health and the environment in NE Wisconsin. In this year-long professional development program, build foundational knowledge and skills in public service and community engagement, then gain hands-on experience in a mentored practicum with a campus, community, or governmental organization. For grad students and postdocs in the biosciences (or connected fields) pursuing careers that include college-level teaching. In this year-long professional development program, get hands-on experience with research-based, inclusive teaching and serve as an instructor (not TA!). Through coursework and practical teaching experience in an undergraduate course, Fellows participate in a supportive community of colleagues and collaboratively develop innovative and effective ways to teach science. This program is designed to help undergraduate students from all backgrounds gain valuable experience that will help you pursue future careers in watershed management. Whether you are interested in water resource management, soil health, agriculture, nutrient management, lake and stream monitoring, weather and climate, forestry, or limnology – this internship is for you! Interns will be placed in one of six different locations throughout the North Central Region and placed with extension faculty mentors working on topics such as agricultural conservation, limnology, riparian management and more. Applications are due Monday, Nov 18.

The amount of funding requested may be up to $500,000. Equipment requests are limited to a maximum of $10,000 for each year. The initiative funds research projects that have the potential to fundamentally transform a field of study as well as projects but may require significant development prior to the submission of applications for external funding. A cover sheet with a 400-word abstract is due Nov. 15 and the complete proposal is due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. The online application instructions and a link to the application form are available at: https://research.wisc.edu.

Call for current undergrad – post-graduate students interested in drinking water to participate in our next competitive call for posters. Up to 10 students will be selected to share their findings in water quality research OR public health education at the annual Water Quality Association Convention in Long Beach, CA, Apr. 22-24, 2025. All those selected will receive a $500 travel stipend. One winner from each category will be awarded a $1,000 David Loveday Memorial Scholarship for continued educational expenses. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM CT on Dec. 31, 2024

Smith, Badger Meter and Watts Water are seeking innovative solutions for the following topics: Treatment and removal of microplastics and nanoplastics at facility or point-of-use scale; Water quality sensing of microplastics and nanoplastics at facility or point-of-use scale. The goal of this solicitation is to identify and support scientific research that will answer key questions and will advance our understanding and management of groundwater in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (WCMP) is seeking proposals to enhance, preserve, protect and restore resources within the state’s coastal zone – all counties adjacent to Lakes Superior and Michigan, with their nearly 1000 miles of shoreline. Looking for funding for your nanotechnology research? EPA is seeking applications for research to develop and demonstrate nanosensor technology with the potential to detect, monitor and degrade PFAS in groundwater or surface water that may be used as drinking water sources. Apply now through November 13.

Research Forward seeks to support collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research projects that are high-risk, high-impact and transformative. It seeks to fund projects that are led by PIs with an established track record of securing and successfully managing external research awards, and that have the potential to open up pathbreaking new research avenues or fundamentally transform a field of study. Abstracts and cover sheets are due on Nov. 15, 2024, and full proposals are due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.

The third annual UW–Madison Sustainability Symposium will take place on Wednesday, Oct 23 from 1:00-5:30 pm at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. This year’s theme is AI and sustainability. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend this no-cost event. Online registration is open through Oct 21.

Be a mentor in the Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities Program. Mentors are faculty, staff or grad students at the Universities of Wisconsin. We will recruit and match undergraduate students to mentored water research projects. Mentors should expect to guide students in the execution of an independent project that will help develop the skills, knowledge and abilities they need for future study. Case Study and Research Methods Webinar - Freshwater Collaborative

Oct 23; 12-1 pm; Zoom - Amber Wichowsky, Associate Professor at UW-Madison, will present her research from a study of a collaborative governance structure established to address ground and surface water contamination in Wisconsin. Research method: Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA),a network analytic approach that can be applied to the study of policy deliberations.

Nov 18; 12-1 pm; Zoom - Ashley Lemke, Associate Professor at UW-Milwaukee, will present her research on 9,000-year-old sites in Lake Huron. Research method: Marine geophysical survey, archaeological excavation, and remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles.
