Get Involved in Water@UW-Madison!
  1. Apply to participate in the Flow Project! The Flow Project is an art science collaboration between undergraduate creatives in the UW system and Wisconsin-based water professionals. We are seeking both water professionals and creatives to be involved in the fifth year of the program. You can see previous artwork and learn more about the program at water.wisc.edu/the-flow-project. Applications close Oct. 27 at 11:59pm.
  2. Be a mentor in the Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities Program. Mentors are faculty, staff or grad students at the Universities of Wisconsin. We will recruit and match undergraduate students to mentored water research projects. Mentors should expect to guide students in the execution of an independent project that will help develop the skills, knowledge and abilities they need for future study. Review the call on our website, and use the “Submit a Project” link to contribute a project.
  3. Submit a poster or art piece to present at our Fall Art and Science Poster Session. Or simply register to attend. This event is open for all members of the community to attend. The poster session promises to be an engaging event full of research and other fun.

Project & Operations Manager; Green Lake Association
This role offers a unique opportunity for a skilled leader to play a key role in safeguarding Green Lake, Wisconsin’s deepest natural inland lake, through hands-on project management, operational oversight, and stakeholder collaboration. The position will stay open until filled with preference to applications received by Oct 7.

in Green Bay, WI. This position will help plan, coordinate, and perform a broad range of native community management and restoration activities, including, but not limited to: prescribed fire, forest management and conversion, invasive plants and brush control, and some heavy equipment operation. INTERNSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Stem Public Service Fellows
For STEM grad students and postdocs invested in the social and community impact of their work. In this year-long professional development program, build foundational knowledge and skills in public service and community engagement, then gain hands-on experience in a mentored practicum with a campus, community, or governmental organization. Science Teaching Fellows
For grad students and postdocs in the biosciences (or connected fields) pursuing careers that include college-level teaching. In this year-long professional development program, get hands-on experience with research-based, inclusive teaching and serve as an instructor (not TA!). Through coursework and practical teaching experience in an undergraduate course, Fellows participate in a supportive community of colleagues and collaboratively develop innovative and effective ways to teach science. Research Forward Initiative
The amount of funding requested may be up to $500,000. Equipment requests are limited to a maximum of $10,000 for each year. The initiative funds research projects that have the potential to fundamentally transform a field of study as well as projects but may require significant development prior to the submission of applications for external funding. A cover sheet with a 400-word abstract is due Nov. 15 and the complete proposal is due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. The online application instructions and a link to the application form are available at: https://research.wisc.edu.
WQRF Opens 2025 Call for Posters and Scholarship
Call for current undergrad – post-graduate students interested in drinking water to participate in our next competitive call for posters. Up to 10 students will be selected to share their findings in water quality research OR public health education at the annual Water Quality Association Convention in Long Beach, CA, Apr. 22-24, 2025. All those selected will receive a $500 travel stipend. One winner from each category will be awarded a $1,000 David Loveday Memorial Scholarship for continued educational expenses. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM CT on Dec. 31, 2024

FUNDING
The Water Council Fall Open Innovation Challenge
 A. O. Smith, Badger Meter and Watts Water are seeking innovative solutions for the following topics: Treatment and removal of microplastics and nanoplastics at facility or point-of-use scale; Water quality sensing of microplastics and nanoplastics at facility or point-of-use scale. There is prize money of $10,000 and exposure to the sponsor companies’ R&D teams for other potential engagement pathways. Applications accepted through Oct 28.
State of Wisconsin Groundwater Research and Monitoring Program FY26 Request for Proposals
The goal of this solicitation is to identify and support scientific research that will answer key questions and will advance our understanding and management of groundwater in Wisconsin. Projects may be of a fundamental or applied nature on selected aspects of groundwater research in the natural sciences, engineering, social sciences or law. Please visit the Joint Solicitation web page for more information. The deadline for submittals is 3 p.m. CDT Friday, November 1, 2024. 
2025-26 Wisconsin Coastal Management Program Grants
The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (WCMP) is seeking proposals to enhance, preserve, protect and restore resources within the state’s coastal zone – all counties adjacent to Lakes Superior and Michigan, with their nearly 1000 miles of shoreline. We anticipate awarding up to $1.6 million in grant funding. A recorded presentation will be made available and posted at http://coastal.wisconsin.gov. For more information please contact staff at coastal@wisconsin.gov. Applications are due Nov. 1, 2024.
Looking for funding for your nanotechnology research? EPA is seeking applications for research to develop and demonstrate nanosensor technology with the potential to detect, monitor and degrade PFAS in groundwater or surface water that may be used as drinking water sources. Apply now through November 13.
Research Forward 2025
Research Forward seeks to support collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research projects that are high-risk, high-impact and transformative. It seeks to fund projects that are led by PIs with an established track record of securing and successfully managing external research awards, and that have the potential to open up pathbreaking new research avenues or fundamentally transform a field of study. Abstracts and cover sheets are due on Nov. 15, 2024, and full proposals are due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.

Wisconsin Neonic Forum
Wednesday, Oct 30; 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; DeLuca Forum at UW-Madison’s Discovery Center 330 N Orchard St., Madison WI. The forum promises to be an enriching experience, featuring an overview of neonicotinoid insecticides with discussions on their uses, efficacy, environmental presence, impact on biota, and related policies. Registration closes Oct. 20!
