Water@UW-Madison's Poster Session in Review
135 attendees gathered at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery for an engaging, energetic, and fun poster session that covered a broad selection of the fascinating water research occurring on the UW-Madison campus. The event provided an incredible opportunity for new faculty to make important early-career connections, and for graduate and undergraduate students to engage across disciplines on water sustainability, conservation, health, access and analysis. We had a poster contest with four categories. Below are our winners!
Best in Show
Awarded to the most outstanding poster or artwork that creatively integrates scientific insight and artistic expression to inspire a deeper knowledge or appreciation of water’s role in our world.

Environmental Toxicologist - GLIFWC
The Environmental Toxicologist will provide technical advice to 11 Ojibwe member tribes in the implementation of their off-reservation, treaty-reserved rights in the Ceded Territories of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, focused on environmental contaminant issues and will perform duties listed below in a manner consistent with Commission policies and procedures. Applications close Dec 1.
Annual Giving & Operations Manager - Clean Lakes Alliance
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. This position is responsible for managing our annual campaign, maintaining donor databases, analyzing engagement metrics, building community relationships, and supporting event logistics.

Executive Director Position - Clean Water Action Council
The Clean Water Action Council of NE Wisconsin is seeking an Executive Director to start January 2, 2025, or earlier, when executive director Dean Hoegger retires.This is a 20-24 hours-per-week position with flexible hours offering the opportunity to guide the organization into the next decade. Work at the UW-Green Bay office with college interns, board members, and volunteer members to carry out the mission of protecting human health and the environment in NE Wisconsin. INTERNSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Research Forward Initiative
The amount of funding requested may be up to $500,000. Equipment requests are limited to a maximum of $10,000 for each year. The initiative funds research projects that have the potential to fundamentally transform a field of study as well as projects but may require significant development prior to the submission of applications for external funding. A cover sheet with a 400-word abstract was due Nov. 15 and the complete proposal is due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. The online application instructions and a link to the application form are available at: https://research.wisc.edu.
★ Research Grant Program - Water Quality Research Foundation
WQRF is inviting researchers to submit concept papers (not to exceed 5 pages) on the efficacy of point-of-use (POU) and point-of-entry (POE) drinking water treatment technologies in real-world settings. A maximum of two grants, each up to $100,000, will be awarded. Concept Papers due Dec. 20th by 11 AM CST Full details about the call for concept papers here: wqrf.org/open-rfps
WQRF Opens 2025 Call for Posters and Scholarship
Call for current undergrad – post-graduate students interested in drinking water to participate in our next competitive call for posters. Up to 10 students will be selected to share their findings in water quality research OR public health education at the annual Water Quality Association Convention in Long Beach, CA, Apr. 22-24, 2025. All those selected will receive a $500 travel stipend. One winner from each category will be awarded a $1,000 David Loveday Memorial Scholarship for continued educational expenses. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM CT on Dec. 31, 2024
Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship

This 10-week summer program places science, engineering, and mathematics students and early career scientists in newsrooms across the country as they use their academic experience and training to write and report on today's headlines and communicate complex issues to a general audience! English and Spanish language placements available. Application is open until Jan. 1, 2025.
Limnology and Oceanography Research Exchange (LOREX) Program - ASLO
The program is an NSF-funded initiative (award #1831075, 2019-2021) to provide training in international research for graduate students. The LOREX international exchanges will allow up to 12 graduate students to travel to host institutions in Australia, Canada, Israel and Sweden to conduct collaborative aquatic science research that they propose this summer (2025).

Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunity Program
The Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities Program provides high-impact educational opportunities by facilitating immersive, hands-on mentored research experiences in freshwater science across the 13 UW Institutions. This program is for undergraduates and is an onsite, paid summer research experience. Applications close Feb 15.

FUNDING
Research Forward 2025
Research Forward seeks to support collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research projects that are high-risk, high-impact and transformative. It seeks to fund projects that are led by PIs with an established track record of securing and successfully managing external research awards, and that have the potential to open up pathbreaking new research avenues or fundamentally transform a field of study. Abstracts and cover sheets were due on Nov. 15, 2024, and full proposals are due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.
FY 2025 Opportunity for Strengthening U.S. Aquaculture through Business Support
Sea Grant anticipates that approximately $5,000,000 will be available in FY2024 and FY2025 federal funds for research projects and programs that will focus on strengthening U.S. coastal, marine, and Great Lakes aquaculture via support for the development of new aquaculture businesses, as well as enhancing existing aquaculture business output, efficiency, and profitability. Letters of Intent are due Dec 4, 2024. Full proposal applications must be submitted to Grants.gov by Feb 12, 2025.
Wisconsin Sea Grant 2026-28 Request for Proposals
The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant College Program is inviting research and education project proposals for the next two-year grant period that begins on February 1, 2026. Proposals and preproposal submission guidelines are available.
Wisconsin Targeted Focus Areas ($130k/year), including: Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility for Underserved or Underrepresented Communities; Organic Contaminants and Marine Debris; Human Dimensions for the Health, Well-Being, and Sustainability of Coastal Communities and Great Lakes Ecosystems

Take Our Flood Survey! - The Water Systems and Society research group at UW-Madison
Are you worried about flooding in Madison? Is your community prepared to handle flooding in the future? Our study is focused on learning about flooding across neighborhoods in Madison, WI, with special interest in understanding the experiences of socially vulnerable communities. We invite all 18+ year old residents of Madison to participate. You will be asked to complete a survey to help us learn more about flooding and water management in your neighborhood. You may also elect to participate in an interview for us to learn more about flooding in your neighborhood and your personal experiences.
