The following Monday, November 18 from 6:00 - 8:30 pm, Water@UW-Madison is partnering with The Nelson Institute’s Tales from Planet Earth film series to present Bad River, a new documentary that follows the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band on their continuous fight for sovereignty.

Join us at the Wisconsin Union Theater for a free screening of the film, followed by a moderated Q & A with the following voices from the film:

  • Aurora Conley, vice chair of the Anishinaabe Environmental Protection Alliance and Bad River tribal member
  • Misty Jackson, American Indian Science & Engineering Society coordinator, Madison Metropolitan School District
  • Patty Loew, professor emerita at UW–Madison and Northwestern University, retired inaugural director of the Center for Native American and Indigenous Research at Northwestern University

Water Quality Monitoring Technical Leader & Waterbody Assessments Coordinator - WI DNR
These two positions are responsible for planning and assuring WDNR’s surface water Clean Water Act implementation monitoring. Water Quality Monitoring Technical Leader position will be headquartered in Central office in Madison, WI. Waterbody Assessments Coordinator position may be headquartered in any DNR Service Center in WI, depending on space availability and the location of the selected candidate. Digital Content Coordinator - Green Lake Association
This part-time role offers a chance to bring your creativity and digital expertise to a small, committed environmental non-profit. You’ll craft compelling content, manage social media, and engage the community in the vital mission of improving Green Lake’s water quality. Environmental Toxicologist - GLIFWC
The Environmental Toxicologist will provide technical advice to 11 Ojibwe member tribes in the implementation of their off-reservation, treaty-reserved rights in the Ceded Territories of northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, focused on environmental contaminant issues and will perform duties listed below in a manner consistent with Commission policies and procedures. Outreach and Communications Specialist (LTE) - Extension Office Brown County

Executive Director Position - Clean Water Action Council
The Clean Water Action Council of NE Wisconsin is seeking an Executive Director to start January 2, 2025, or earlier, when executive director Dean Hoegger retires.This is a 20-24 hours-per-week position with flexible hours offering the opportunity to guide the organization into the next decade. Work at the UW-Green Bay office with college interns, board members, and volunteer members to carry out the mission of protecting human health and the environment in NE Wisconsin. INTERNSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
★ DPI STEAM Education Fellows Application
The Department of Public Instruction is looking to hire 15 STEAM fellows (PK-12) who will engage in professional development, collaborate with regional and statewide partners, and implement STEAM-related initiatives in their schools and communities. Fellows will participate in collaborative learning experiences, curate educational resources, develop a plan to locally engage underrepresented students in STEAM education, and share their learning with others. The fellowship aims to foster innovation, equity, and excellence in STEAM education across Wisconsin. Fellowships highlights: $2,000 stipend; Grow your own practice with free professional learning; Support others to grow their practice by sharing what you’ve learned. Applications due Nov 8.
Scientific Teaching Fellows
For grad students and postdocs in the biosciences (or connected fields) pursuing careers that include college-level teaching. In this year-long professional development program, get hands-on experience with research-based, inclusive teaching and serve as an instructor (not TA!). Through coursework and practical teaching experience in an undergraduate course, Fellows participate in a supportive community of colleagues and collaboratively develop innovative and effective ways to teach science. Application deadline: Nov. 11
Watershed Management Research and Outreach Undergraduate Internship Program
This program is designed to help undergraduate students from all backgrounds gain valuable experience that will help you pursue future careers in watershed management. Whether you are interested in water resource management, soil health, agriculture, nutrient management, lake and stream monitoring, weather and climate, forestry, or limnology – this internship is for you! Interns will be placed in one of six different locations throughout the North Central Region and placed with extension faculty mentors working on topics such as agricultural conservation, limnology, riparian management and more. Applications are due Monday, Nov 18.
Research Forward Initiative
The amount of funding requested may be up to $500,000. Equipment requests are limited to a maximum of $10,000 for each year. The initiative funds research projects that have the potential to fundamentally transform a field of study as well as projects but may require significant development prior to the submission of applications for external funding. A cover sheet with a 400-word abstract is due Nov. 15 and the complete proposal is due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. The online application instructions and a link to the application form are available at: https://research.wisc.edu.
WQRF Opens 2025 Call for Posters and Scholarship
Call for current undergrad – post-graduate students interested in drinking water to participate in our next competitive call for posters. Up to 10 students will be selected to share their findings in water quality research OR public health education at the annual Water Quality Association Convention in Long Beach, CA, Apr. 22-24, 2025. All those selected will receive a $500 travel stipend. One winner from each category will be awarded a $1,000 David Loveday Memorial Scholarship for continued educational expenses. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM CT on Dec. 31, 2024
Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowship

This 10-week summer program places science, engineering, and mathematics students and early career scientists in newsrooms across the country as they use their academic experience and training to write and report on today's headlines and communicate complex issues to a general audience! Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunity Program
The Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities Program provides high-impact educational opportunities by facilitating immersive, hands-on mentored research experiences in freshwater science across the 13 UW Institutions. This program is for undergraduates and is an onsite, paid summer research experience. Applications close Feb 15.

FUNDING
Looking for funding for your nanotechnology research? EPA is seeking applications for research to develop and demonstrate nanosensor technology with the potential to detect, monitor and degrade PFAS in groundwater or surface water that may be used as drinking water sources. Apply now through November 13.
Research Forward 2025
Research Forward seeks to support collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research projects that are high-risk, high-impact and transformative. It seeks to fund projects that are led by PIs with an established track record of securing and successfully managing external research awards, and that have the potential to open up pathbreaking new research avenues or fundamentally transform a field of study. Abstracts and cover sheets are due on Nov. 15, 2024, and full proposals are due Jan. 24, 2025 at 4:30 p.m.
FY 2025 Opportunity for Strengthening U.S. Aquaculture through Business Support
Sea Grant anticipates that approximately $5,000,000 will be available in FY2024 and FY2025 federal funds for research projects and programs that will focus on strengthening U.S. coastal, marine, and Great Lakes aquaculture via support for the development of new aquaculture businesses, as well as enhancing existing aquaculture business output, efficiency, and profitability. Letters of Intent are due Dec 4, 2024. Full proposal applications must be submitted to Grants.gov by Feb 12, 2025.

Take Our Flood Survey! - The Water Systems and Society research group at UW-Madison
Are you worried about flooding in Madison? Is your community prepared to handle flooding in the future? Our study is focused on learning about flooding across neighborhoods in Madison, WI, with special interest in understanding the experiences of socially vulnerable communities. We invite all 18+ year old residents of Madison to participate. You will be asked to complete a survey to help us learn more about flooding and water management in your neighborhood. You may also elect to participate in an interview for us to learn more about flooding in your neighborhood and your personal experiences. If you choose to participate, you are eligible to receive a summary of research findings if interested. Email the research team to ask how. Click here to access the survey.
