2nd Round of Water@UW-Madison's
Community Based Water Research Grants Open
The applications for the last round of Water@UW-Madison's Community-Based Water Research Grants is due on April 15, 2025. This seed grant program was launched in 2023. It has been inspiring and impactful, leading to sustainable relationships and larger, externally funded projects.

This grant will provide up to $10,000 to UW-Madison faculty, staff, or graduate students to design and implement a new community-based research (CBR) project, add a CBR component to existing work, or continue an ongoing CBR project. Grants may be used to support projects in any discipline that engage with community organizations, public sector entities, or grassroots groups to address water-related challenges. Projects may address any aspect relevant to water or water resources, but are required to detail how they will meet community-identified priorities. More information and application details are available on our website at: https://water.wisc.edu/community-based-water-research-grants/

Water Policy Specialist - Center for Water Policy UWM
This position is designed to immerse emerging lawyers in the dynamic world of applied research for multidisciplinary water policy solutions. The Water Policy Specialist will work with research teams and interact with the public and private sector to inform policy making. Apply by Apr. 7, 2025.
Water Quality and Climate - Assistant Professor - Michigan State University
The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a full‐time, 9-month tenure system Assistant Professor with a 50% research, 30% teaching, 10% extension, and 10% service assignment.  The position start date is anticipated to be August 16, 2025. This is a full-time, non-teaching academic staff position at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences. The application deadline is Apr. 20, 2025.
LTE Invasive Species - Door County Soil & Water Conservation Department

2025 University of Wisconsin-Green Bay High School Freshwater Summer Scholars Program
Supported by the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin, this paid opportunity allows high school students to engage in field and lab research alongside UW-Green Bay faculty, staff, and partner organizations. New this year we have positions available across Northeast Wisconsin (Green Bay, Manitowoc, Appleton and Two Rivers). Open to current high school students and Spring 2025 graduates. Application deadline: Apr. 14
★ 2025 Student Travel Award - GLFC
Two awards are available for up to USD $1,500 each. The award promotes academic excellence by encouraging students to present their graduate research results at scientific conferences. The travel award is awarded annually to M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to understanding Great Lakes aquatic ecology and fishery science. Application deadline: Apr. 15, awards are announced early May
★ Hands-On Summer River Restoration - UW-River Falls
Join the two-week summer DAM Crew and learn professional skills for monitoring the impacts of dam removal on the Kinnickinnic River. UW-River Falls is hiring up to 12 students from any Universities of Wisconsin campus to work on the fourth annual DAM Crew. You will work alongside experts from Inter-Fluve and Trout Unlimited.  The summer DAM Crew is a free, non-credit experience provided through the Freshwater Collaborative. Funds are available for food, travel expenses and campus housing. Apply by May 20.
Wisconsin Aquatic Resources Seasonal Technician - Trout Unlimited
Trout Unlimited (TU) is seeking two (2) Aquatic Resource Seasonal Technicians based in Northern Wisconsin and 2-4 based in southwest Wisconsin to help fulfill the organization’s mission to bring together diverse interests to care for and recover rivers and streams, so our children can experience the joy of wild and native trout and salmon. Positions open until filled.
Summer LTE Watercraft Educators - Green Lake Association
These positions focus on educating boaters about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) through watercraft inspection and outreach at public boat landings around Green Lake. The roles involve watercraft inspection, educational activities, and data reporting, with positions running from late May through Labor Day weekend. The positions offer flexible, part-time hours with the opportunity for full-time work, and a competitive hourly wage with a performance bonus. Positions remain open until filled.

FUNDING
Community-Based Water Research Grants
Water@UW-Madison is pleased to partner with the Morgridge Center for Public Service to offer a new funding opportunity to support community-based water research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thanks to generous support from the provost, grants will provide up to $10,000 to UW-Madison faculty, staff, or graduate students to design and implement a new community-based research (CBR) project, add a CBR component to existing work, or continue an ongoing CBR project. Two rounds of funding are available in 2025. In each round, allocated funds will be awarded according to project priority until they are exhausted. Applications that fail to secure funding in the first round are welcome to re-apply.

FY2025 Young Fishermen’s Career Development Projects
The National Sea Grant Office (NSGO) anticipates approximately $1,000,000 in FY2025 federal funds will be available to eligible applicants to support 2-3 projects that will develop and execute local, regional and national programs, workshops and services to enable fishermen to enter career paths and make a living supplying seafood from our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes. Applications must be submitted to Grants.gov by Apr 23, 2025.
★ New Open Innovation Challenge Topic - The Water Council
The Water Council and their corporate partners (A. O. Smith, Badger Meter, Watts Water and *new sponsor* Xylem) are seeking innovative solutions for the following topics.  Those include:
  • Sensors for biological organisms and disinfectant byproducts
  • Removal of organic contaminants from water
  • “Lab on a chip” for water and wastewater applications

★ 2025 National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF) - National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

Free Fishing Weekend and Free Fun Weekend - WI DNR
June 7-8
During Free Fishing Weekend, all Wisconsin waters are open to residents and non-residents to fish without a license or trout or salmon stamp. However, organizations hosting free fishing events should note that all fishing regulations, including size and bag limits and species restrictions, will be enforced. June 7-8 is also Free Fun Weekend, so state park admission fees and trail passes are waived, too.

Organizations are invited to register their events with the DNR for additional promotion to the public. After registering, organizations can request materials to hand out at their events. The deadline to register events is May 29
★ Contribute to a Special Issue of Energy Nexus - Pumped-hydro as an energy storage option
Energy Nexus, an interdisciplinary journal that covers the deep, broad, meaningful convergence between energy, water, and agriculture. This special issue seeks to publish new research and innovative industrial case studies on pumped-storage technologies and developments. Manuscripts will be due by 30 July 2025. You can read the full special issue scope here. Energy Nexus is currently offering a 30% discount on the cost of the article publishing charge (APC) for all papers published in this special issue.

★ Americorps Earth Day - Green Bay
Apr. 22; 1660 E Shore Drive, Green Bay; 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Volunteers are asked to pre-register for the event using the online form. On the form, your group can select which activity you would prefer.
These include:
  • Tree planting at the Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Tree planting at Perkins Park
  • Trail mulching at the Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Garlic mustard removal at the Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Phragmites cutting and removal at the Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Park clean ups (8+ locations available)
Volunteer Stream Monitoring with Rock River Coalition
From April or May to October, our 200+ volunteer stream monitors collect monthly data about the health of our streams across the Rock River Basin. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and various county Land and Water Conservation Departments use the data to better understand watershed protection and restoration needs. Want to help protect a stream near you? Consider attending one of our hands-on training workshops. Anyone interested in volunteering or just learning more is welcome. By the end of the workshop, you’ll know how to measure water quality and be ready to adopt your own stream monitoring site. No experience or equipment needed!
