Tableau visualization of the month: Trends in Student Enrollments
|
It gives us summary and detailed information about student enrollments over time, including majors, named options (concentrations or tracks within majors), and certificates.
- Student characteristics—academic level, admit type, and demographics.
- Academic characteristics—school/college, department, and major.
To access the visualization, you need a NetID and be on campus or connected via VPN.
What are some examples of people who might use visualization and why?
- Faculty and staff involved in program planning, program review, and self-study reports can use it to complete areas of the student profile and trends section.
- Communications staff can gather institutional figures for presentations, articles, and social media posts.
Where does the data come from?
This visualization, created by DAPIR, uses two primary data sources.
- The Office of the Registrar manages census date enrollment data, which reflects enrollment numbers as of the 10th day of each term.
- UW–Madison’s governed academic structure connects the university’s degree major programs to the departments and schools/colleges that administer them.
Enrollment changes, such as students adding or changing majors, routinely occur throughout the semester, but the data in the visualization does not change. This visualization is the source of official enrollment numbers and is used in required reporting.
